    Job Description:

    The Biological Scientist II will mainly focus on performing molecular biology experiments. Additionally, will be responsible for general laboratory management duties, monitoring and caring for laboratory animals, and conducting experimental work within the Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy within the Department of Neurosurgery.

    The Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida, College of Medicine is committed to providing comprehensive clinical services for the diagnosis, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system, including brain tumors, aneurysms, stroke, epilepsy, functional disorders, and spinal disorders and injuries. Our clinical care mission also extends throughout North Central Florida through regional neurosurgery programs. We offer the full spectrum of neurosurgical and neuro-oncology treatment options for both adults and pediatric patients. Our research labs and investigator-led initiatives and clinical trials are developing promising new treatments for neurological diseases that are extremely difficult to treat with conventional therapies. The Department of Neurosurgery offers education and training programs such as ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency programs and fellowship programs.

    Duties include:

    Under minimal supervision, perform experimental work, including: flow cytometry, confocal
    microscopy, RNA seq analysis, in vivo animal experiments, culture and engineer cells in vitro. Includes
    analyzing data and reporting data. Adjust/modify experimental designs as necessary based on
    experimental data analysis. Assist with report writing and developing presentations.

    Participates in laboratory management, including: maintaining lab equipment, keeping inventory
    updated, purchasing lab and office supplies, maintaining laboratory safety programs, training of personnel
    in laboratory safety techniques, keep laboratory records, preparing reagents, maintaining clean work
    areas, and managing chemical and biological waste. Participate in writing and editing SOPs (standard
    operating procedures) for the laboratory.


    Animal work, including: monitoring and care, surgical support (intracranial and subcutaneous tumor
    implantation in mice), post-surgical monitoring and care, health evaluation and surveillance, giving
    injections (intravenous, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, etc), removing sutures, maintaining procedures
    and protocols, collecting biological samples (blood, tissues, etc.), and maintaining laboratory records.

    Expected Salary:

    $61,350-$69,700

    Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master's degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.
    Preferred:

    Experience in fluorescent imaging, flow cytometry, and animal methods.
