    Job Description:

    The User & Access Services Unit at Library West is committed to providing welcoming, responsive, and reliable access to UF’s resources and learning spaces. We are hiring friendly, dependable Student Assistants for Fall 2026 to help deliver positive, supportive experiences for all Library West visitors, including students, staff, and members of the community.

    As one of the public faces of the Smathers Libraries, Student Assistants greet and assist visitors at the Circulation Desk, share information about library resources, troubleshoot common issues, loan and return materials, and contribute to special projects as needed. This role is essential in maintaining the high-quality service environment that Library West strives to provide.

    Weekly schedules are set at the beginning of the semester but may vary based on library hours. Shifts may include closing hours and weekends.

    Length Of Employment: Available to start after August 10, 2026, continue through the end of the Fall 2026 semester, and possibly beyond.

    Hours: 8-10 hours per week

    Work Schedule: The hours for this position will fall between the open hours of Library West and may include shifts on the weekends and weekday closing hours.

    Monday-Thursday | 8:00am-1:15am

    Friday | 8:00am-10:00pm

    Saturday | 10:00am-6:00pm

    Sunday | 10:00am-1:15am

    Job Duties

    Public service library duties include:

    • Staff the circulation desk on the second floor of Library West
    • Search the UF catalog to determine the location of library materials and if they are available for checkout
    • Follow policy and procedure when checking out and returning library materials
    • Search, retrieve, check out, and return course reserve materials
    • Answer telephone calls promptly and provide directional assistance for patrons
    • Assist patrons with general questions and refer them to other staff or faculty members when needed
    • Assist patrons with operation of printers, scanners, workstations, and other equipment
    • Assist with other general library duties and/or projects, such as shelving returned materials or supporting other departments
    • Report missing and damaged library items
    • Keep workstation clean, sanitized, and stocked
    • Periodically patrol the library to collect browsed library materials, and report maintenance or technological equipment issues to supervisors
    • Periodically patrol the library to uphold library policies, as needed
    • Assist staff members with weekend and weekday closing procedures and/or weekend opening procedures, as needed
    • Assist in creating displays and other crafts as overseen by staff
    Expected Salary:

    $15.50/hr

    Required Qualifications:
    • Federal Work Study Eligibility REQUIRED - NO EXCEPTIONS!
    • Must be dependable, punctual, detail-oriented, and courteous
    • Must be able to work weekends and closing shifts, as needed
    • Ability to manage time and commitments effectively, including scheduled work hours
    • Ability to follow detailed instructions
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Experience with technological skills and applications
    • Must be able to lift and push up to 25 lbs
    Preferred:
    • Previous experience in any library setting
    • Previous customer service experience
    • Experience using research databases and/or web searching skills
    • Knowledge of UF Libraries Catalog and databases
    • Comfortable in Windows operating system
    • Previous experience with management applications (Microsoft Teams, Outlook)
    • Ability to work independently once trained
