    Job Description:

    The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is accepting applications for a Biological Scientist IV. The position will reside within the Division’s Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Laboratory and will report directly to Dr. Karina Serban, the laboratory director and an experienced physician-scientist in the field of Alpha-1 deficiency and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

    Human and murine tissue processing and epithelial cell isolation and precision cut lung slices (PCLS)-related Experiments

    • Develop novel approaches and analytical tools as required to harvest and maintain epithelial cells and PCLSs cultures derived from human explanted lungs and murine lungs.
    • Design and develop dose escalation studies involving alveolar organoids and PCLSs cultures in accordance with IRB and IBC protocols.
    • Collect, dissect, examine and interpret results of human and murine epithelial cells and tissue harvest.
    • Develop, organize and conduct immunofluorescence and FACS analysis and data interpretation.
    • Design and direct metabolism assays (Seahorse), to include oversight of technicians performing testing, review and interpretation of results.
    • Provide intellectual input as to troubleshooting strategies utilized in organoids and PCLS cultures.

    Scholarly activities related to Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and COPD research conducted in the lab

    • Analyze and interpret data, prepare graphs and figures for meetings and grant submissions.
    • Present data and manuscripts in weekly lab meeting and annually in divisional meetings.
    • Design and direct ELISA testing for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency to include oversight of technicians performing the testing, review and interpret the results.
    • Participate in bio-product development to include initial designs, pilot experiments, and collaborating with the Office of Technology and Licensing for assurance of appropriate patents.
    • Create or modify web-based tools and test potentially new software to provide statistical and computational tools for big data interpretation.

    Managerial Duties

    • Supervise other scientists and undergraduate students.
    • Coordinate experiments involving human tissue harvest to include procedures in collaboration with lung transplant team and other research groups on campus.
    • Interact and coordinate with off-campus collaborators samples shipments, common on-line meetings, and in-person visits.
    • Prepare a quarterly report on the performance of the scientists and students, under direct supervision.
    Expected Salary:

    $70,000 - $92,200; Commensurate with education and experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience with human and murine tissue handling, 3D culture of PCLS and epithelial cells in organoids model are a must. This position will require independent thinking and the ability to serve as leader on complex projects to investigate new molecular signaling and physiological changes in murine models of Alpha-1 deficiency and COPD. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field’s concepts, allowing for development of novel practices and procedures as well as being able to work independently with minimal supervision.
