    OPS Assistant Counsel (Public Records)

    Classification Minimum Requirements:

    Law degree (L.L.B. or J.D.) from an ABA-accredited college of law and must be a member of The Florida Bar.

    Job Description:

    Provide legal advice regarding and handling public records requests, subpoenas and other records requests and authorizations.

    • Review records requests to determine appropriate objections, exemptions and necessary or helpful clarifications.
    • Review requested records to determine responsiveness, objections or exemptions and make appropriate legal decisions related to the redaction, withholding and production of requested records.
    • Prepare responsive records for production to requestors, including redaction of the records, if necessary.
    • Communicate with records requestors regarding objections, exemptions, production, clarification and progress of review and production.
    • Provide advice and training to university clients regarding public records-related legal compliance.
    • Work with other members of the public records team to ensure efficient, timely and responsive records review and production.
    • Ensure that other Office attorneys are informed and consulted as appropriate.

    Other duties and responsibilities as requested or assigned.

    Expected Salary:

    Commensurate with education and experience.

    Required Qualifications:

    Law degree (L.L.B. or J.D.) from an ABA-accredited college of law and must be a member of The Florida Bar.

    Preferred:

    The OPS-Assistant Counsel should preferably have experience working with or advising clients subject to Florida’s Public Records laws (including Fla. Stat. ch. 119 and section 1012.91), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and/or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

    The OPS-Assistant Counsel should be:

    • A team player who is comfortable with a dynamic and changing environment that emphasizes collaboration and team performance over management hierarchy.
    • The ability to manage numerous projects and cases simultaneously under tight deadlines while maintaining a good sense of humor and positive attitude.
    • A creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances.
    Special Instructions to Applicants:

    The OPS-Assistant Counsel position may be either a part-time (20 hours/week) or full-time position. The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
