    We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Medical Lead to provide clinical leadership and strategic direction within our University Health and Counselling Service.

    This is a unique opportunity to combine clinical excellence with leadership in a purpose-driven environment that places student wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. As Medical Lead, you will play a key role in shaping the delivery of primary healthcare services for a diverse student population while supporting a team of dedicated clinicians to provide outstanding patient-centred care.

    Working closely with the General Manager and senior leadership team, you will contribute to service planning, clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and the ongoing development of a positive, collaborative, and high-performing clinical culture.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Providing clinical leadership and support to medical practitioners within UHCS
    • Promoting excellence in clinical practice, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives
    • Supporting clinical governance activities and ensuring compliance with relevant professional standards and legislation
    • Contributing to service planning, operational decision-making, and strategic initiatives
    • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including nurses, counsellors, psychologists, and administrative staff
    • Supporting workforce development, mentoring, and professional growth within the medical team
    • Maintaining a high standard of clinical care through direct patient consultations
    • Supporting the development and implementation of evidence-based healthcare practices
    • Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external healthcare providers
    • Contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and student-centred service delivery

    This role combines clinical leadership with hands-on practice, allowing you to continue delivering care while helping drive service excellence and positive health outcomes for students.

    This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week role on a permanent contract.

    You are an experienced and respected medical practitioner who is passionate about delivering high-quality healthcare and supporting the development of others.

    You bring strong clinical leadership skills, sound judgement, and the ability to foster positive relationships across multidisciplinary teams. You are committed to continuous improvement, patient-centred care, and creating an inclusive and supportive environment where both students and colleagues can thrive.

    Most importantly, you are motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to student wellbeing while helping shape the future direction of a trusted and highly valued health service.

    Ngā pūkenga motuhake | Important skills and experience

    • Current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and a current practising certificate
    • Significant experience working in General Practice or primary healthcare
    • Demonstrated clinical leadership experience and the ability to support and mentor clinicians
    • Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety principles
    • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
    • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams
    • A commitment to culturally responsive practice and equitable health outcomes

    The following would be beneficial:

    • Vocational registration in General Practice
    • Experience working with young adults or within tertiary health services
    • Experience leading service improvement and healthcare innovation initiatives
