    Working/Functional Title

    ECCM Communication Veterinary Nurse

    Position Summary

    The Communication Nurse supports the Emergency and Critical Care (ECCM/ICU) service by coordinating communication, documentation, and key workflow elements across inpatient care. This role helps ensure consistency between inpatient rounds and the medical record, supports documentation and compliance requirements, assists with charge accuracy, and facilitates efficient patient flow and client communication throughout hospitalization.

    Core responsibilities include active participation in inpatient rounds; reviewing medical records for accuracy, completion, and regulatory compliance; supporting rabies and confinement requirements; confirming consents; and coordinating missing documentation or diagnostic information. The Communication Nurse assists with charge review, transfer coordination, deposits, estimates, and client follow‑up in collaboration with clinicians, residents, and students, without independently making medical decisions.

    This role also functions as a liaison between clinical teams, the front desk, call center, and ancillary services to identify, communicate, and help resolve workflow gaps. Additional duties include managing owner belongings, supporting student scheduling and orientation activities, maintaining communication tools (such as phone lists and provider boards), and assisting with administrative and academic tasks as needed.

    In addition to communication and coordination responsibilities, up to 50% of this position is expected to be spent on the clinical floor assisting with treatments and hands‑on patient care, based on daily staffing levels and patient care needs.

    Minimum Requirements

    Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

    Desired Qualifications

    Six to twelve months as a Veterinary Technician in an educational setting; experience in Emergency and Critical Care medicine.

    Summary of Physical Demands

    Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team.

    Summary of Health Risks

    TB risk or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis. Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue. Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
