    Job Description:

    Position Function:

    Reporting to the Director of Historical Manuscripts in Archives & Special Collections, this professional staff position will assist with processing collections and providing reference assistance for collections held by the Manuscripts Unit of the MSU Libraries' Archives & Special Collections. This position will play a key role in reducing processing backlogs, implementing efficient processing strategies, an ensuring collections are discoverable and usable for teaching, learning, and research.

    Archives & Special Collections

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    - Arranges and describes manuscript collections in accordance with professional and local standards
    - Collaborates to establish processing priorities and to create processing plans
    - Creates and edits finding aids using archival management systems and archival description standards (e.g., ArchivesSpace and Describing Archives: A Content Standard [DACS])
    - Identifies and carries out rehousing and basic preservation treatments as needed
    - Assists with reference services and supports instruction or outreach activities as needed
    - Serves as part of the back-up team for the reading room desk
    - Helps oversee graduate and undergraduate assistant/intern projects as needed
    - Assists in the implementation of archival management software
    - Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections
    - Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in a related field
    Two years of relevant experience in an archival setting

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience with archival processing; previous experience with ArchivesSpace software platform; Master's degree in library and information studies, public history, or a related field

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    - Basic knowledge of archival principles and standards
    - Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
    - Attention to detail
    - Excellent oral and written communication skills
    - Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    - Ability to balance competing priorities

    Working Conditions and Physical Effort

    - No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility
    - Job frequently requires standing, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
    - Vision Requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
