    Job Description:

    Working/Functional Title

Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Chan Lab

    Position Summary

The Chan Lab at Michigan State University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work on evolutionary genomics of Southeast Asian reptiles. The lab focuses on specimen-based biodiversity research, with an emphasis on understanding the drivers of cryptic biodiversity through the integration of genomic, morphological, and ecological data.

The primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral scholar will be to generate chromosome-level reference genomes and to investigate patterns of structural variation, sex chromosome evolution, and macroevolutionary diversification. The position will involve both laboratory and bioinformatic work, as well as opportunities for field-based sample collection in Southeast Asia. The postdoctoral scholar will also be expected to assist with manuscript preparation, grant writing, student mentoring, lab management, and will be encouraged to develop independent research projects aligned with the lab’s research program.

    Unit, College, University Information

This position is based in the Department of Integrative Biology (IBIO) at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The start date is September 1, 2026.

IBIO is home to a vibrant and collaborative research community, and the postdoctoral scholar will have opportunities to attend workshops, conferences, and interact with other departments and programs at MSU such as the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (EEB) program. IBIO and the Chan Lab are committed to postdoctoral career development and will provide opportunities to gain experience in mentorship, grant writing, and professional development.

As part of its land-grant identity, MSU seeks to advance knowledge and transform lives by providing outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. MSU, IBIO, and the Chan Lab are thus interested in candidates who are committed to conducting research of the highest caliber while fostering a collaborative and supportive research environment. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to engage with the PI and lab members to help build a positive and inclusive lab culture.
