    Job Description:

    Position Summary

    The Assistant Director for Recruitment, Selection, and Training leads initiatives that support the recruitment, selection, training, and development of student leaders, including Resident Assistants, graduate assistants, and fulltime live-in staff. This includes chairing committees, guiding equal opportunity recruitment strategies, coordinating selection processes, and directing training programs that prepare students and staff for success in their roles and professional careers. The position collaborates closely with partners across the department, division, and university and provides supervision for 1–2 graduate assistants.

    Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

    • Serves as a member of the Residence Education Leadership Team, contributing strategies that connect residential life with student learning, engagement and success.
    • Supervises graduate students and/or interns, providing guidance, coaching, and ongoing support. Assists and advises graduate students in setting and attaining personal goals and objectives
    • Integrates the residential curriculum into onboarding and training efforts, developing learning outcomes and assessment strategies that advance educational goals. Reviews recruitment and training practices to ensure alignment with equity and inclusion priorities.
    • Identifies and supports training and development opportunities, collaborating with campus partners and university stakeholders to create comprehensive learning experiences and ensure recruitment and training efforts align with institutional student success and engagement priorities.
    • Leads search committees responsible for recruiting, selecting, onboarding, and training live-in student leaders, graduate assistants, and fulltime staff, serving as the primary coordinator for these activities.
    • Updates unit position and selection of materials to reflect the developmental and educational impact of staff on student development. Develops and implements procedures and relevant policies, manuals, guides, reports, spreadsheets, and communications for candidates, staff, and partners.
    • Facilitate connections with the student experience record program to validate student learning and leadership competencies developed within the student leader and student employment positions in Residence Education
    • Supports supervisors in guiding student staff performance including investigations, coaching conversations and disciplinary outcomes using development-focused approaches that reinforce learning and accountability.
    • Represents Residence Education in departmental and divisional training and onboarding spaces emphasizing the role of student leaders as a high impact learning experience.
    • Chairs the training absence excusal process.
    • Handles sensitive information with discretion and manages confidential matters appropriately.
    • Participates in department and university committees, special projects and programs.
    • Performs ongoing administrative tasks such as email management, record maintenance, file audits, and documentation.

    All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.

    Minimum Requirements

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Administration, Higher Education, Student Affairs or Education; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications

    Three to five years of experience as a residence hall director in a college/university, or experience in residence life administration with significant leadership and supervisory experience. Strong project management skills and excellent writing and oral communication skills, including the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments and social identities. The ability to communicate with all levels within a department or organization, university partners, and successfully work as a part of a team. Experiences integrating residential curriculum into staff training and developments. Experience developing learning outcomes and assessments for training and development programs. Strong skills in computer use, data management, web site management, and report-generation. Analytical and critical thinking skills. The ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information. Is able to work in an environment that involves conflict management, variable hours, and occasional weekend activities.
