Position Function:

Perform routine and specialized procedures in support of horticulture research projects.

Salary Grade: 10

Department Profile:

Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as Mississippi State University's "southern exposure". South MS Branch Station is the headquarters of our horticulture program.

Anticipated Appointment Date:

February 2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist horticulturist: 1) In the greenhouse - prepares media, germinates seed, transplants seedlings and rooted cuttings, maintains plants which includes spraying for pests, fertilizing, watering, controlling weeds and maintaining greenhouse equipment. 2) In the field - prepare land for planting; plant; cultivate; harvest; irrigate; fertilize; scout for weeds, insect pests, and diseases; and perform pest control. 3) Records data from greenhouse and field experiments. 4) Maintains field plots, keeps potting slab and greenhouses clean and orderly. 5) Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1) High school diploma or GED. 2) One year of experience: six months of general experience and six months of related experience to the duties and responsibilities specified above. 3) Physically able to do field work; able to follow detailed instructions; be punctual, dependable, and cooperative with other workers. 4) Valid driver's license.

Mississippi Pesticide Applicator Certification (Category 10) to be obtained following employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to work with others.
2. Physically able to do field work; able to follow detailed instructions; be punctual, dependable, and cooperative with other workers.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1) Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. 2) Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
