Job Description

These duties may change depending on the needs of the Water Resources program at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, Immokalee, FL. May at times require travel to field sites located off the SWFREC campus. May require travel to field trial located out of Florida.

  1. Design, develop, evaluate and maintain hydrologic/agricultural/natural monitoring systems (e.g. water quality auto samplers, data loggers, water level recorders, soil moisture measurement devices, datalogger programming, wireless communication) with focus on hydrology and water quality in agricultural, urban or natural systems. Design and implementation of QA/QC protocols of the monitoring data acquired from the systems described above.
  2. Coordination of data collection and field activities. Supervision of field assistants/technicians and other hydrology and water quality data.
  3. Data analysis, including geospatial analyses and report writing for water resources and associated multi-disciplinary agricultural and biological engineering projects and development of automation tools (including cloud/web-based and phone Apps).
  4. Delivery of water resources extension programs in conjunction with water resources specialist and represent the SWFREC water resources program at state, federal, and international meetings.
  5. Co-authorship of refereed and non-refereed research and extension papers.
  6. Purchase equipment and supplies, development of construction bids, keep inventory, and supervision of infrastructure construction related to water resources engineering projects led by the supervising professor.
  7. Assist in exploring research funding and co-development of research funding proposals (includes obtaining quotes and helping to prepare proposal budgets).
  8. Co-supervision of graduate students and OPS (temporary) staff for field research as needed.
  9. Perform related work as required

Expected Salary:

$62,500

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and one year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in agricultural/civil/environmental or other engineering or in Agricultural Operations and Management or earth sciences (agronomy/soil and water science/ environmental/geology or other related discipline) with adequate experience in instrumentation, data logger programming, and data collection. A

  • Previous experience and publications in areas of modern instrumentation, sensors, dataloggers, and their programming and tools such as GIS, UAVs, and remote sensing is preferred
  • Experience in project management
  • Working knowledge of at least one computer programming language
  • Background in hydrologic engineering, agricultural, natural resource or environmental sciences Use of hydrologic and water quality models and decision support systems
  • Ability to assist in the development of research projects in conjunction with faculty and other staff Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in research, analysis or testing Knowledge of the methods of data collection
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis using statistical software (e.g. SAS, R)
  • Ability to develop educational materials for agricultural water conservation and quality program Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
