Position Function:

This position coordinates and optimizes various tasks across legal, licensing, and live mascot areas. It ensures efficient workflow by managing attorney projects, subpoenas, office maintenance, and administrative support. Additionally, the role manages social media content, influencer relations, marketing activities, and trademark enforcement for Licensing. For the Live Mascot role, it oversees social media presence, event appearances, and maintains a positive brand image.

Salary Grade: 13

Department Profile:

The Mississippi State University Office of General Counsel represents Mississippi State University (MSU) and advises its President, Vice Presidents and other administrators on legal issues affecting the University and its operation. In litigation or other court proceedings of state-wide interest, the State of Mississippi Attorney General’s Office takes the lead, with the assistance of the General Counsel, in representing MSU.

The Office of General Counsel analyzes legal implications in policy decisions as they relate to federal and state laws and regulations, and policies of the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The goal of the office is to provide timely, accurate, and professional legal advice to MSU to accomplish what is often referred to as preventive law.

The Office of General Counsel does not represent students, faculty, or staff except when, as employees, they are named as defendants in litigation for alleged actions in the course and scope of their employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Legal:
• Create and manage attorneys’ projects in Net Docs
• Process UPD subpoena requests
• Manage office maintenance, supply ordering, and organization to optimize workflow efficiency
• Serve as a point of contact for visitors and phone inquiries to ensure professional and timely communication
• Manage calendars for office members and legal conference room
• Execute office errands to support leadership to aid daily operations and timely project completion
• Provide administrative support to enhance office productivity
• Examine contract requests to confirm any existing agreements with partnering entities
• Coordinate Student Worker schedule and front desk coverage

Licensing:
• Create, curate, and manage content schedule and posting for the official trademark licensing social media accounts
• Assist in identifying and maintaining relationships with influencers
• Create and maintain a marketing calendar and ensure timely updating and communication to licensees and retailers through the Affinity Gateway Portal
• Conduct research and analysis on licensed vendors and market trends
• Assist internal departments, student organizations, club sports, advancement, and alumni clubs in finding licensees to work with university-branded product orders.
• Assist in trademark enforcement reporting through Counterfind
• Coordinate the internal brand artwork approval process through the licensing agent’s system and respond daily to pending artwork and internal royalty requests
• Assist with retail artwork/merchandise approval to maintain brand standards
• Assist with marketing and public relations activations, including event planning, sourcing, and ordering, as well as execution

Live Mascot:
• Manage social media presence for Mississippi State University's live mascot on all platforms
• Accompany the live mascot to athletic events and other appearances to capture engaging, real-time content to enhance interaction and outreach- All home football games and, occasionally, other events as requested
• Uphold and align public perception of the live mascot with university standards to ensure a consistent, positive brand image

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communication, Fashion Merchandising, or Hospitality

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
2. Strong computer skills including knowledge of various social media platforms
3. Strong oral and written communication skills
4. Ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships with co-workers and clients
5. Ability to work both within a team-oriented environment and independently
6. Knowledge of marketing, brand management, or trademark/licensing operations

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. Limited physical effort required.
2. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with the exception of game days.
3. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, often for several hours at a time, during events.
4. Capability to move around various event locations, including indoor and outdoor settings.
