Job Description:

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at the University of Florida is accepting applications for a Health Educator position. As a Health Educator for AHEC, you will help support the Tobacco Program by assisting with planning, organization and implementation of instructional and evaluation activities related tobacco cession.

About This Role

  • Serves as a trained Tobacco Treatment Specialist by facilitating tobacco cessation classes at UF Health clinical facilities. Assists in coordination of scheduling of tobacco cessation classes and UF Health clinics and maintains communications with various points of contact at each site.

  • Serves as the primary intake specialist for ingoing and outgoing calls to describe available tobacco cessation services, motivates the tobacco user to quit, assesses patient’s health risks, and pre-registers participants for AHEC tobacco cessation classes.

  • Conducts reminder calls for cessation classes, as well as follow-up calls for attendees. Acts as a point of contact for the distribution of post-course Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

  • Responsible for data collection and management, including NRT inventory and distribution, attendance, and other program data.

  • Promotes in various health fairs and events to present tobacco health education, as well as promoting the tobacco control program and tobacco-free campus.

  • Due to the nature of the job and our contract with the Florida Department of Health, you must not be a tobacco user, including vaping, to be eligible for this opportunity.
  • Travels to different locations in the area for cessation classes and lifts/unloads materials up to 50 pounds for the classes.

Expected Salary:

$22.05 - $24.00 per hour; commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Due to this role requiring frequent travel in the Gainesville area, a valid Drivers’ License and access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Must not be a tobacco user, including vaping, as required by AHEC’s state tobacco contract with the Florida Department of Health.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in a health-related field, with interest or background in tobacco prevention and cessation programs.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Health Education and Behavior, Public Health, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, databases, and virtual platforms such as Zoom.
  • Experience delivering engaging and effective presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to assess, engage, and motivate individuals toward successful behavior change, particularly in tobacco cessation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a team, actively contributing to shared goals and supporting colleagues to deliver high-quality health services.
  • Detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks and responsibilities.
  • Experience as an instructor, facilitator, or group leader in health education or behavior change programs.
  • Experience with community health programs or campaigns, such as health fairs, outreach events, or public health education, promoting wellness and healthy behaviors.
