Job Description:

Position Function:

The College of Engineering Career Advisor position reports to the Assistant Director of Cooperative Education, which is housed in the Cooperative Education Program Office located in McCain Hall. Additional accountability is provided to the Bagley College of Engineering to support student success initiatives. This position is a vital role in the Career Center and provides career advisement/development activities for College of Engineering students and alumni through one-on-one appointments and in groups on career related topics. This role assists in building and maintaining relationships across their assigned academic function and coordinating activities related to the programs, events, and services of the Career Center. This position also assists in coordinating and performing activities related to the programs, events, and services of the Cooperative Education Program. Also, this role works closely with the Employer Relations team in connecting with employers and alumni for on-campus recruiting activities. Additional duties and responsibilities may change as programs are added and/or enhanced or as needs dictate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide comprehensive career counseling and coaching through one-on-one appointments and in groups on career related topics including major and career exploration, resume/cover letter critiques, job and internship search strategies, applying to graduate or professional school, mock interviews, networking, and addressing any additional needs of students and alumni within their respective college.
2. Serve as Career Center liaison to students, on-campus faculty/staff, employers, and alumni and stay up-to-date on academic majors/tracks/trends for assigned area(s).
3. Provide personalized career advising to engineering students interested in majors outside of engineering, helping them explore alternative career paths.
4. Collaborate with academic departments to align career assessments with curriculum planning and student advisement, promoting a cohesive approach to development.
5. Develop core presentations and coordinate workshops/seminars/presentations for assigned area(s).
6. Participate in orientations, program requests, as well as Bagley College of Engineering student support events and activities.
7. Interpret career assessments, such as the STRONG Interest Inventory and TypeFocus.
8. Foster strong employer relationships within assigned area(s).
9. Help to coordinate and manage population-specific Career Fairs and/or events alongside employer relations team.
10. Provide staffing support for office-wide career fairs and events that promote the career development of students and alumni.
11. Market upcoming events, fairs, workshops, and resources to students through Connections, departmental contacts, and college/major-specific listservs.
12. Collaborate with Employer Relations team to approve job postings for assigned population and promote interview schedules.
13. Support employing organizations with recruitment activities on campus.
14. Update student records in Connections on a case-by-case basis.
15. Meet with students to complete necessary cooperative education and/or internship paperwork.
16. Provide student outreach on co-op and internship opportunities through classroom presentations, workshops, and tabling events.
17. Assist the Manager of Assessment and Technology in the collection of First Destination Survey data.
18. Assist with instruction for the Career Planning (COE 1323) course as needed.
19. Perform related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position may supervise exempt and/or non-exempt employees; including student staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience (yrs.): 1-2 years experience related to the position

Substitution: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Psychology, or related field
Experience: Two years of experience related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills with effective public speaking skills
• Strong interest and commitment to the educational development and career preparation of college students
• Establish and maintain productive relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers and co-workers
• Ability to independently perform high quality work following well-defined policies and procedures both independently and as a team
• Ability to develop special projects and/or assignments and follow through to completion
• Strong computing background with demonstrated experience with management information systems, Web-based applications, and an affinity for applying technology to achieve productivity.
• Flexible and resilient, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and navigate change.
• Organizational skills: Organization and prioritization skills are relevant skills for this position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
Job frequently requires sitting, talking, hearing.
Job occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching, handling objects with hands, and lifting to 25 pounds.
