Position Function:

The successful candidate will coordinate logistics and information between principal investigators, crew leads, subcontractors, NAVFAC central offices, and installation contacts to support scheduled completion of project deliverables.

Salary Grade: 13

Department Profile:

The Department of Forestry is one of three departments in the College of Forest Resources and the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State University. The faculty have diverse teaching, research, service, and outreach expertise in the disciplines of forest biology and watershed management; forest economics, management, and policy; and forest measurements, biometrics, and spatial technologies. The Department has two undergraduate degree programs, Forestry and Natural Resource and Environmental Conservation, each accredited by the Society of American Foresters with ~200 students in addition to ~40 graduate students in both on-campus and distance education programs. The University’s John W. Starr Memorial Forest (a +8,000-acre research and teaching forest), the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, and the Tombigbee National Forest are located in close proximity to the University and used for teaching, research, and Extension/outreach activities.

Mississippi State University is a Carnegie Very High Research Activity (R1) institution and a land grant university with a strong connection to the state-wide Extension Service. The University is in Starkville, a medium-size college town in northeast Mississippi (www.msstate.edu/web/about).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The function of the project coordinator for the Ecosystem Management Technical Assistance to Promote Carbon Sequestration project is to supervise and coordinate collection of field data and samples from longleaf pine restoration efforts. Responsibilities include coordinating subcontracts, planning site visits, supervising and assisting in collection of forest inventory data, soil samples, vegetation samples, and wildlife associated data. The project coordinator will also process associated lab data. The project manager also coordinates and assists in planning all elements of grant management, evaluation, reporting and program accountability to the project funding agency. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Project Director in preparing quarterly and annual reports, budget tracking, maintaining a calendar of deadlines, organizing meetings, cataloging project data, developing presentations and other tasks as needed. Other duties as assigned. May supervisor employees but supervision is not the main focus of the job.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Economics, or related field.
• One (1) years’ experience related to essential duties and responsibilities listed above.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Economics, or related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to use independent judgement.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to communicate professionally with diverse groups.
• Knowledge and proficiency using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral).

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
