CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Professional and Continuing Studies Student Services ACCESS Center is the source for advisement, registration assistance, information, and student services resources and support for prospective students and current Continuing Education Non-Degree (CEND) and Graduate College Non-Degree (GCND) students. The ACCESS Center provides high-touch advising services tailored to the needs of each individual connecting with our office. Serving a diverse, multi-generational student population, the ACCESS Center provides a pathway for non-traditional learners at various stages of their educational journeys to access opportunities available at UD, including admission and readmission to the University. The diverse reach of the ACCESS Center includes prospective and current CEND and GCND students, prospective undergraduate transfer students, undergraduate students in academic suspension, students interested in degree completion after a break from the University, UD alumni, individuals exploring undergraduate and graduate programs, UD employees, Delaware residents interested in the Over-60 tuition waiver, and high school students.

Under the limited direction of the Director, Student Services, the Academic Advisor II is responsible for providing academic advisement and managing the Business Essentials Certificate Program. Working in partnership with Admissions, the Academic Advisor II is a main point of contact for prospective undergraduate transfer students during the inquiry and pre-admission advising phase, performing unofficial transcript evaluations, curriculum reviews, and providing advisement on undergraduate degree programs, the transfer credit process and admission requirements. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a high level of independent judgment and initiative, as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse, multi-generational constituencies within the University and the broader community is required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide academic advisement to prospective students and current Continuing Education Non-Degree (CEND) and Graduate Non-Degree (GCND) students, including information on UD policies and procedures, degree programs and requirements; criteria and process for admission/readmission to the University; course selection and registration. For students unsure of an educational path, assist with major exploration, discussing options and guidance on how different UD degrees fit with educational and career goals.
  • Provide advisement to prospective undergraduate transfer students during the inquiry and pre-admission phase, completing unofficial transcript evaluations and curriculum reviews for prospective transfer students, supporting the University’s recruitment efforts through information and advisement on degrees of interest and the admissions process. Assist prospective transfers wishing to take UD courses prior to admission as CEND students with course selection and registration.
  • Provide advisement to students in academic suspension, taking courses toward readmission. Provide support and assistance, actively monitoring student progress through emails and appointments to promote student success, utilizing the University’s new platform, Stellic, in support of this goal.
  • Utilize strong knowledge of UD resources, proactively connecting students to campus supports and services, such as the Office of Academic Enrichment, Office of Disability Support Services, the University’s Writing Center, and other units across campus.
  • Provide advisement to students with interest in the AA Online Program and those matriculated in this program. Monitor academic progress of students in the program to ensure degree progression, degree clearance, and graduation.
  • Manage the University’s Business Essentials Certificate Program, including the admission process, tracking of student progress, course registration overrides, and conferral of certificate completion.
  • Compile and maintain data on the frequency and types of advisement appointments each month, preparing reports for the Director as requested for operational and strategic planning.
  • Provide assistance and support to front desk operations, responding to email inquiries within the ACCESS Center advisement box.
  • Act as a backup for the Director in considering and approving course permit forms and late changes of registration requests.
  • Represent the ACCESS Center at events for prospective transfer students run by the undergraduate Admissions Office.
  • Represent the ACCESS Center as a member of the Transfer Student Working Group.
  • Represent the ACCESS Center at University and outside events to support PCS outreach efforts.
  • Participate in activities that promote professional development.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in student personnel, counseling, or related discipline preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of University transfer credit policies and the ability to evaluate student transcripts and academic records.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Ability to communicate with students about their course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact with University-wide constituencies to resolve issues and assist prospective and current students.
  • Knowledge of UDSIS and SLATE platform preferred.
  • Knowledge of University curriculum and academic policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with diverse, multi-generational constituencies within the University and the broader community.
  • Strong judgment and independent decision-making skills in addressing student needs and issues.
  • Understanding and consideration for the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
