Position Function:

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine offers a combined Emergency Critical Care (ECC) program consisting of a six-month specialty internship followed by employment as a Clinical Instructor of ECC for six months. Opportunities for long-term employment at the Animal Health Center in Starkville, MS or Animal Emergency and Referral Center (AERC) in Flowood, MS may be available at the end of the 12-month program.

Salary Grade: UC

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The specialty internship will consist of 26 weeks of training in ECC in the AHC intensive care unit (ICU) under the guidance of an American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care (ACVECC) specialist. Once comfortable with inpatient management, the specialty intern will transition to taking emergency room (ER) cases with the criticalist. There will be opportunities to learn from other specialists in the AHC and the goal of the specialty internship is to provide advanced training in ECC. The specialty intern will be part of a team consisting of faculty clinicians, residents and clinical year students. A certificate of internship is awarded for satisfactory completion of the program.
After successfully completing the specialty internship, the clinical instructorship will begin, and the salary will be adjusted. Twenty-six weeks will be spent working as a Clinical Instructor of ECC in the AHC or AERC. The participant in the program will select their preferred location.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a DVM or equivalent degree. Candidates must be eligible for a Mississippi veterinary license and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Completion of a rotating internship is not a requirement for this program. New graduates and experienced practitioners are invited to apply.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Ability to handle, load, restrain, and work with large animals.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
