Job Description:

The Department of Surgery is seeking qualified candidates to fill a junior level Medical Scientist I position in their Transplant Surgery division. This position assists in a research project led by a faculty member in the Transplant Surgery Division, Department of Surgery. The project includes complex studies (critically ill subjects being treated with procedures that may result in moderately severe adverse events, therapeutic intervention trials involving organ biopsy). This position will work independently while the PI is always available for consultation. Normal work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 8-5 but will vary to include nighttime, weekend and/or holiday hours on an as needed basis dependent upon patient availability.

The beginner scientist will perform procedures following general instructions from the PI and learn to recognize problems and unexpected results. Once problems are identified, s/he will present the issues in the regular lab meeting and propose potential solutions for further discussion. S/he will be responsible for data collection, organization, and analysis.

This position will also act as liasion for research subject, investigator, IRB, sponsor, and healthcare professionals; Document investigational product (drug/device) accountability; Assist with developing informed consent document and obtaining patient consent for samples in the clinic. Assist with maintaining patient protocol records for accuracy, source documentation, and assurance of compliance with protocol guidelines.

The incumbent will be responsible for isolating primary tissue, blood, and cells from patient samples collected in the clinic; preparing and staining immune cells and tissues using standard flow cytometry techniques; operating flow cytometer and FACS software for multi-parametric data acquisition; growing and manipulating human cells, cell lines, and their derivatives.

This position will also assist with analyzing data collected in ongoing research projects and will utilize specialized computer software to analyze genomic data including but not limited to Matlab and SPSS.

Expected Salary:

$16.80-$18.50 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related life science field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work experience and expertise in routine molecular methodologies such as the construction of gene expression vectors, primary cell separation and culture, western blotting, and mRNA assays are required. Experience in flow cytometry and immunology is preferred.
