Job Description:

Position Function:

This position will lead and/or support the implementation of international research development projects housed in the International Institute and funded by agencies such as USAID, USDA and American Councils. The international research development projects vary based on the scope of work outlined in the grant documents. For example, these projects may be agricultural, educational, or community-based projects. It is expected that the person hired for this position may travel to foreign countries 2-3 times per year for periods of 12-20 days per visit. This position will report directly to a deputy director of research development in the International Institute located at MSU. There will be frequent contact with agencies, organizations, or individuals that are partners on projects. Foreign language skills are not required. There are several ongoing projects with the expectation for new projects to emerge; therefore, duties and responsibilities will be fluid as each project commences given both partner capacities and current operations. These are time limited projects, and this position is contingent upon continued funding. The position shall also assist in the research and partnership development functions of the unit as time allows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide project leadership and communication for the design and development of project deliverables and other necessary functions of the program.
2. Support the planning, reporting, budgeting, communication, logistics, and evaluation needs of assigned project(s).
3. Support relationships with the funding agency, prime contractor, our partner universities, and other stakeholders.
4. Support the development of training resources and those necessary for stakeholders.
5. Understand and manage appropriate protocols for interacting with international partners.
6. Design, development and implement training and other deliverables that build capacity and sustainability of partnering entities and those served through the project(s).
7. Hold a valid US passport and able to secure a visa for work in foreign countries for extended periods of time. Anticipate 2-3 trips per year ranging 12-20 days per trip.
8. Capacity to support and lead submission of proposals for funding for additional international projects.
9. May perform any other duties as assigned.

This position reports to the Deputy Director of Research Development

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree

Experience (yrs): 3 years working in education, development, or project management.

Preferred Qualifications:

International Education or Development Experience, Grant Writing and Management

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Strong ability to adapt quickly to uncertain and changing work environments in a foreign country.
2. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
3. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an international setting.
5. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to manage/coordinate multiple detailed, tasks.
8. Independent self-starter with strong work ethic.
9. Skills in budget management.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
2. Frequent external imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis and may require working odd hours or evenings occasionally with partners around the globe.
3. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
