Job Description:

A highly qualified post-doctoral associate candidate is sought to join the research team of Dr. Amy Y. Vittor to study the impact of agroforestry and other agricultural practices on the transmission dynamics of zoonotic arboviruses in Darien, Panama. This study is in collaboration with Drs. Carrera and Valderrama at the Gorgas Memorial Institute (Panama), Drs. Burkett-Cadena (UF-Florida Medical Entomology Lab), Mavian (UF-Pathology), and Drs. Buenemann (New Mexico State University-Geography) and Hanley (New Mexico State University-Biology). We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in field work, including entomology and conducting human serosurveys, to join our interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will have a background in One Health and international work.

Responsibilities will include selecting appropriate field sites in collaboration with our geography and in-country colleagues, establishing rapport with local farmers and agricultural organizations, planning and coordinating adult and immature mosquito trapping across an agricultural gradient, assisting with viral and mosquito sequencing and serosurveys of farmers and their livestock. The post-doctoral associate is expected to possess good written and oral English language skills in order to present research updates at weekly lab meetings, seminars and conferences as well as to assist in writing manuscripts and grants related to the project. Fluency in Spanish is not mandatory, but highly desirable. Additional responsibilities include researching, interpreting, and critically evaluating primary literature; compiling and analysis of data; and maintaining complete, precise, and up-to-date records in laboratory notebook. Lastly, the post-doctoral associate is expected to contribute to an environment that fosters cooperation and duties will involve the occasional supervision and training of technicians, graduate students, undergraduates, and student workers, and other related duties as required.

Expected Salary:

Salary will be in line with NIH policy for Post Doc positions.

Minimum Requirements:

The position requires a PhD or MD/PhD. Applicants should have good communication, problem-solving skills, cultural competency, and ability to work flexible hours and in a challenging field setting.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; will be expected to work independently, present research findings at scientific conferences, compose manuscripts, and assist in experimental design.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior mosquito trapping and identification (especially Culex species).

Background in using molecular biology techniques such as next generation sequencing and bioinformatics.

Background in working with wildlife.

Spanish language fluency.
