CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Assistant Coach I, Women's Rowing at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Athletics, Community & Campus Recreation (DACCR), upholding and embracing the departmental mission of ‘Achieving Excellence Together’. The Assistant Coach I reports to the Head Coach of Women's Rowing, as well as the Sport Administrator, and carries out all responsibilities delegated by the Head Coach. The incumbent assists with all aspects of the operation of a Division I scholarship program, including instruction, preparation for opponents and recruitment of student-athletes, under the general supervision of the Head Coach. On-campus contacts include students, support staff, administrators, peers and colleagues while off-campus contacts include prospective student-athletes and their families as well as peer coaching personnel at other institutions/and the general public (fans). The incumbent must be thoroughly knowledgeable of the technical and tactical aspects of the sport and effective at teaching that expertise to the student- athletes in the program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and execute daily practice and game plans. Develop student-athletes in the technical aspects of the game.
  • Recruit qualified student-athletes for the University, including but not limited to correspondence with club and high school coaches and prospects, coordinating and facilitating visits, evaluation of talent at practice and competition, working camps and clinics that align with program needs, and assisting with maintenance of databases.
  • Assist with organization and management of team and recruitment travel logistics.
  • Executes game-day responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Represents University to high school coaches, guidance counselors, alumni, parents and prospective student-athletes.
  • Assists with film/video analysis in preparation for upcoming opponents and for recruiting evaluation of talent. , Provides analysis for team/player development and records and organizes training-related data.
  • Assist with fostering an environment of excellence in team/personal conduct, academic success, health and well being and an overall positive student-athlete experience.

  • Executes other duties as assigned by Head Coach, and administrative assignments as designated by Athletics Administrators.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in coaching related curriculum or acceptable equivalent field, and one-year collegiate coaching or playing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to comply with NCAA rules (Division I familiarity preferred).
  • Advanced knowledge of skills and strategies, as well as specialized knowledge of sport required.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and work collaboratively with staff and student-athletes, as well as ability to work independently, when required.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions and manuals and make administrative procedural decisions and judgments.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • The position often requires work beyond that of the normal University workday and involves nights, weekends and extensive travel.
